Hayfield Primary School

Loving Learning, Loving Life.

YEAR 2

Mrs Holmes and Ms Grove

A very warm and happy welcome to Year 2! This year is the final stage in the infant journey where we try really hard to support children to do their best and become independent and organised learners, preparing them nicely for entering the juniors. We recognise the need for play, investigation and movement within Year 2, and we incorporate brain breaks and daily miles within our working day. We like to learn outdoors when we can, so you will find us outside, whatever the weather. Raincoats and wellies at the ready!

Maths, Phonics and English lessons happen daily and we encourage our children to explore and persevere. In Maths, we use a range of apparatus and support our children to be good at explaining their reasoning to a partner. English covers a range of genres from narrative to recount texts.  We love to learn and perform poetry too, and always have a go at writing some of our own. We really focus on bringing on the children as fluent and confident readers. We want every single Year 2 pupil to be instilled with a love of books and be able to decode with confidence!

Our favourite topics over the year include a topic about St Lucia - which is our class country; a topic about the Great Fire of London and we also learn some of the history and geography of Hayfield village. Science this year is mainly about animals and plants, so lots of practical, hands on experiences, and we head outside as often as possible. We love art and design/technology in Year 2, so come and take a look at our fantastic books and displays.

Please help us by reading daily with your child, as well as learning our Common Exception words: CommonExceptionWords_Y2.pdf (oxfordowl.co.uk).

Opportunities to writr for a purpose (ie: a thank you note to Grandma!) are always very helpful too!
